Soon after you turn off the main coastal highway and into World Heritage-listed Shark Bay there is another turning to Hamelin Pool. Following this road takes you to a boardwalk that allows you to walk out and view the world’s best-known colony of stromatolites. These are almost identical to organisms from 3.5 billion years ago, that are considered responsible for creating our atmosphere allowing more complex life to exist. It was strange looking at these unassuming coral-like formations and knowing they are partly behind your existence.
